Red River County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Up in Red River County, in the little town of Detroit, there stands a church with a story worth pullin' over for. The First Christian Church of Detroit.

And it all starts, as so many good Texas stories do, with one man showing up at the right moment. That man was the Reverend A. H.

Darnell. In 1901, right around the time the town of Bennett Station was becoming known as Detroit, Darnell organized this congregation. Not just organized it, mind you.

He stepped up as its first pastor too. He wasn't the kind of man to hand something off and walk away. The following year, he provided leadership for the construction of a sanctuary.

Now, they didn't ship fancy materials in from far away. The lumber came from nearby mills. Local wood, local hands, local faith.

What those hands built was a carpenter Gothic structure, and friend, that phrase deserves a moment. Lancet windows, the kind that draw the eye upward whether you mean to look up or not. And then there's the corner tower entry, with a gable right over the doors, welcoming you in before you've even reached for the handle.

It is the kind of building that tells you something was meant to last. And it has. That congregation, organized by one reverend with vision and follow-through, is still standing in Detroit, Texas, in a church built from the timber of its own county.

Some things just root themselves deep and hold.

What the marker says

This congregation was organized by the Rev. A. H. Darnell in 1901, soon after the town of Bennett Station became known as Detroit. Darnell then served as first pastor of the fellowship and provided leadership for the construction of this sanctuary the following year. Built of lumber cut in nearby mills, the carpenter Gothic structure features lancet windows and a corner tower entry with a gable over the doors. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1984
