Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the First Christian Church of Llano. Now settle in, because this is one of those stories that starts quiet and just keeps on growing. Around 1882, a congregation began worshiping together in Llano.
No grand sanctuary, no steeple catching the Texas light. Just folks gathering in a two-room schoolhouse, making do with what they had and meaning every word they said. By 1886, they'd outgrown those two rooms, and the members were meeting over at the county courthouse.
Picture that, a congregation borrowing the same halls where cases got tried and county business got done. But that courthouse arrangement wasn't the end of the journey either. Two years after that, the church moved to this very site.
This site, right here, where it still stands today. And in the early days, baptisms didn't happen in any font or basin. They happened in the Llano River, out in the open, under whatever sky the good Lord provided.
There is something about that detail that just stays with you. Then came 1910, and the congregation made it official, taking on the name First Christian Church of Llano. The name caught up with what the people had been building all along.
Over the years, classrooms and a fellowship hall were added to that original 1888 sanctuary, because the membership kept growing and the programs kept expanding, and a building that fits a congregation one decade rarely fits it the next. More than a hundred years of Llano's cultural history runs right through these walls. And the marker tells us plainly: First Christian Church continues to uphold the ideals and traditions of its founders.
Started in a two-room schoolhouse, baptized in a river, and still standing on the same ground it claimed in 1888. That's not just a church. That's a commitment.
What the marker says

By 1886, members were meeting in the county courthouse, and two years later, the church moved to this site. Early baptisms were held in the Llano River.
