Rusk County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the marker at First Methodist Church of Overton tells it, and I'll do my best to honor every word. Way out in Rusk County, some stories don't start with a grand ceremony or a city charter. Sometimes they start with neighbors deciding they've got enough faith between them to build something that lasts.

That's what happened in 1873, when many members of the nearby Jamestown church stepped forward and became the pioneer members of this congregation. Right here on this site. And they didn't wait around for supplies to arrive easy, either.

Lumber got hauled in by wagon, board by board, and a small frame building went up that very year. You think about what that took, and you start to understand the kind of people we're talking about. Decades passed.

The congregation kept growing, kept gathering, and in 1932 they built a new sanctuary right here on the same ground. Five years later, in 1937, a two-story education building joined it. The place was becoming something real, something rooted.

Then came 1969, and a new church was completed here, bigger and ready for what was coming. But here's the detail that'll stay with you. When they built that new church, they didn't leave the old one entirely behind.

They carried the stained glass windows from the previous structure right into the new building. All that color, all that light, all those years, brought forward. The church has gone on sponsoring traditional programs for the congregation and continuing to serve the community, as it has for more than a hundred and twenty years.

Some things, it turns out, you don't leave behind when you move on. You load them in the wagon.

What the marker says

This church dates to 1873 when many members of the nearby Jamestown church became pioneer members of this congregation. A small frame building was built that year on this site with lumber hauled by wagon. A new sanctuary was built here in 1932, and a two-story education building was added in 1937. As membership grew a new church was completed here in 1969, using the stained glass windows from the previous structure. The church sponsors traditional programs for the congregation, and continues to serve the community as it has for more than 120 years.
