Brazoria County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna do it justice. Out in Brazoria County, in the town of Angleton, there's a congregation with roots that go all the way back to 1898. That's when the First Missionary Baptist Church organized — and from the very beginning, it was a church built for and by the people working the land.

African American field hands, tenant farmers, folks whose labor shaped that whole agricultural stretch of the county. That's who this church was for. That's who showed up.

And that matters. Remember that foundation, because everything else grows from it. In 1905, under the direction of the Reverend Hamp Evans, the congregants built their very first sanctuary.

Not handed one. Built one. Services came once a month at first — once a month, you make the most of it, you carry it with you the rest of the weeks.

But membership grew, and the church kept pace, eventually adding more Sunday services as the community swelled around it. Now here's the thing about a church like this. It isn't just a place you go to on Sunday morning.

Throughout its history, the First Missionary Baptist Church has been a social and cultural focal point of its community. A gathering place. A steady presence.

And when the hard work of the 1960s and 1970s arrived — the civil rights era — this church was right there in the middle of it. Citizens came together inside those walls to discuss strategies for integrating the local chemical industry. Think about that.

Not just marching in the streets, but sitting down, talking it through, planning — right here in this congregation that started out serving the field hands and tenant farmers of Brazoria County. From 1898 to the civil rights movement and beyond, the First Missionary Baptist Church of Angleton has been exactly what a community needs it to be — every single time.
