Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. On October 21, 1860, a man named Reverend Levi Tenney stood in Belton, Texas, with eight souls beside him, and he said, in so many words, we're starting a church. Eight founding members.

That's it. That's your whole congregation. You could seat them all in a couple of pews and still have room for the hymnals.

But you have to start somewhere, and those eight people were the somewhere. Now, in the early years, this little congregation moved around. They met here, they met there, wherever they could find a roof and a willing room.

That kind of wandering has a way of testing a community, seeing whether the people are committed to each other or just to the building. These folks kept showing up. Then, in 1879, the congregation put down real roots.

Property was purchased west of the intersection of Second Avenue and North Pearl Street, and a proper church building went up. A place of their own, finally. But churches, like towns, have a way of growing and shifting, and by 1905 and into 1906, First Presbyterian relocated again, this time to a site on North Main.

That move carried them forward for decades, until 1964, when the congregation settled at the intersection of Church and Greenbriar. Now that address, Church and Greenbriar, you have to appreciate that. Along the way, the people of First Presbyterian did what congregations at their best do.

They looked outward. They supported Presbyterian missions and programs, and they threw their weight behind community efforts like the Helping Hands Ministry and Meals on Wheels. Started by one preacher and eight believers in 1860, and still standing, still serving, in Belton.

Some things, it turns out, are built to last.

What the marker says

On October 21, 1860, the Rev. Levi Tenney established a Presbyterian congregation in Belton with eight founding members. After meeting in several locations during its early years, property was purchased west of the intersection of Second Ave. and North Pearl St. for the construction of a church building in 1879. The church relocated in 1905-1906 to a site on North Main, and in 1964 to the intersection of Church and Greenbriar. In addition to supporting Presbyterian missions and programs, members have contributed to community projects such as the Helping Hands Ministry and Meals on Wheels. First Presbyterian today continues to serve as a spiritual leader in the Belton community.
