Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this one. Now, some churches just appear, ready-made, like they always belonged right where they're standing. But this one has a longer road behind it than the building lets on.
It started out not as the First Presbyterian Church of Bartlett at all, but as the Nazareth Church of the Central Texas Presbytery, and it was constituted way out on Indian Creek, back in June of 1875. That's where the congregation first gathered itself together, found its footing, and became a church. Out on the creek, under that wide Texas sky.
Then, years later, something shifted. The congregation reorganized, here in Bartlett, in 1897. And once they were settled and rooted in this new place, they got to building.
The sanctuary went up in 1899, Victorian architecture and all, the kind of craftsmanship that says these folks intended to stay. Those high Victorian lines, the careful detail, the sense that the people who raised this building believed it ought to look like it meant something. And it did.
From a creek bank in 1875 to a Victorian sanctuary standing in Bartlett at the turn of the century. That's not just a church. That's a congregation that traveled to find its home, and then built something worthy of the journey.
