Burleson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Burleson County, the story of the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell begins with one man on horseback, more or less, a traveling preacher by the name of Reverend Hugh Wilson. Now, Wilson wasn't the kind to stay put.

He was an early Presbyterian missionary, and the marker makes a point of calling him out for his active work on the Texas frontier. That's not a small thing to be noted for, not out here. So when the city of Caldwell got itself founded in 1840, Wilson was the sort of man who'd show up not long after, maybe before the dust had even settled.

The marker is careful about this, though. It says the first written account of the congregation appears in an 1850 document, but it also says it's likely the congregation was organized soon after Caldwell was founded. So the paper trail and the real story may not have started on the same day.

That's frontier Texas for you. Now, here's a detail I love. Come the 1880s, the Presbyterians were meeting in the Methodist Church building.

Make of that what you will. Good neighbors, practical people, or maybe just a congregation that knew how to make do. Then came 1906.

A fire destroyed the Presbyterians' first sanctuary. Everything they'd built, gone. But they didn't go with it.

The congregation held on, and that's exactly why the marker calls them an important historic link, not just to the early days of Caldwell, but to the very beginning of the Presbyterian Church in Texas. Reverend Hugh Wilson rode out onto the frontier, and what he started is still standing.

What the marker says

This congregation was organized by The Rev. Hugh Wilson, an early Presbyterian missionary noted for his active work on the Texas frontier. Although the first account of the church appears in an 1850 document, it is likely that the congregation was organized soon after the City of Caldwell was founded in 1840. During the 1880s, the congregation met in the Methodist Church building. A 1906 fire destroyed the Presbyterians' first sanctuary. The congregation is an important historic link to the early days of Burleson County and the beginning of the Presbyterian Church in Texas.
