Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the First Presbyterian Church of Garland. Now, some stories start with a bang: gunfights, floods, cattle drives. This one starts quieter than that, but don't let that fool you.
Quiet things have a way of lasting. It was April 22, 1888, when the Rev. Benjamin Spencer stood up with twenty-five charter members and organized a Cumberland Presbyterian congregation right there in what would become Garland, Texas.
Twenty-five people. You could fit them in a decent-sized living room. Farmers were in that group.
Retail business owners. Others whose names the years have carried off. A mixed-up, workin'-folks congregation if ever there was one.
Now, for a good while, this church didn't have a permanent home. Worship services moved around; wherever the congregation could gather, they gathered. That went on until 1901, when they finally built themselves a sanctuary.
One room. Frame construction. Stood on South Ninth Street.
You can almost picture it: a simple building holding something larger than itself. It did its job. Then 1929 came along, and that one-room frame building gave way to a brick structure.
A congregation that started with twenty-five souls and a preacher had grown into something solid enough to build in brick. And here's the thing (that church is still there). Still standing as a reminder of Garland's early religious history.
Some stories end in ruins. This one just keeps going.
What the marker says
This congregation traces its roots to April 22, 1888, when the Rev. Benjamin Spencer and twenty-five charter members organized a Cumberland Presbyterian congregation. The church served a diverse membership, including farmers, retail business owners, and others. Worship services were held in a variety of locations until the first sanctuary, a one-room frame building, was built on S. Ninth Street in 1901. It was replaced by a brick structure in 1929. This church remains a reminder of Garland's early religious history.
