Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville. Now settle in, because this is one of those stories that starts small and just keeps growing. We're talking about a church organized in 1880, right there in Greenville, Hunt County.

And in those early days, the congregation didn't have walls of their own to worship between. They made do. A courthouse one Sunday, maybe.

An opera house the next. Now picture that, a congregation raising hymns in a place that on other nights might have hosted a traveling troupe of actors. That's a kind of stubborn faith right there.

Eventually, they got around to erecting a structure of their own, a proper home for the work they had in mind. And the work was considerable. This wasn't a congregation content to tend only to its own spiritual garden.

The members rolled up their sleeves and aided the city of Greenville through volunteer work. They looked beyond the county line, beyond the state line even, getting involved in global missions. And then there's something the marker takes special care to mention: a multisensory learning center, and programs built specifically for families dealing with learning disabilities.

That's a congregation paying attention to the folks who sometimes get overlooked. For over a hundred years, the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville has played a vital role in the spiritual, educational, and social needs of this city. Started in a courthouse, maybe an opera house, and never really stopped finding new rooms to fill.
