Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the First Presbyterian Church of Winnsboro. Now settle in, because even a church story can have some good texture to it if you listen close. This one goes back to 1871, when the Reverend R.

E. Sherrill chartered a congregation out in Wood County, Texas. He didn't start from nothing, mind you.

He gathered former members of the Presbyterian church in Webster, just three miles to the southwest, and from that smaller, older fellowship, something new took root in Winnsboro. That's your founding right there. A community pulling itself together, finding a home.

The first building they put up was a white frame structure, the kind of modest, honest construction that says more about a people than a cathedral ever could. They built it near the city cemetery, on land given by a woman named Nancy Cook, described on the marker as an early Winnsboro philanthropist. Think about that.

Somebody believed enough in this congregation to give them ground to stand on. The years passed, the congregation grew, and in 1907 they acquired a new site entirely. Now here's the detail I want you to hold onto: they didn't build a new sanctuary right away.

They moved a frame schoolhouse onto the property and used it as their place of worship. A schoolhouse. Repurposed, relocated, and rededicated.

There's something quietly Texan about that kind of practicality. By 1953, the church had added a manse and a fellowship hall, the congregation filling out its footprint on that land one structure at a time. And through all of it, from 1871 forward, the marker tells us this church has played a vital role in the community life of Winnsboro.

Not a footnote. Not a landmark frozen in amber. A living, working part of the town.

The Reverend Sherrill chartered something that lasted, and Winnsboro has been the richer for it.

What the marker says

Organized in 1871, this church was chartered by the Rev. R. E. Sherrill with former members of the Presbyterian church in Webster (3 mi. SW). The first building for this church was a white frame structure built near the city cemetery on land given by early Winnsboro philanthropist Nancy Cook. In 1907 the congregation acquired this site, and a frame schoolhouse was moved here for use as a sanctuary. By 1953 a manse and fellowship hall had been built. Throughout its history, the church has played a vital role in the community life of Winnsboro. (1983)
