Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the First Presbyterian Church of White Deer, Carson County. Now settle in, because this little building carries more story than its walls might suggest. The first church building in White Deer.

That's the title this place holds, and it earned it. Dedicated on the Fourth of July, 1909, which, if you ask me, is about as Texas a birthday as a church could hope for. But here's the thing about how it got built: the money didn't come from one deep-pocketed benefactor or some grand denominational fund.

It came mainly through gifts from pioneer members' home churches, far-off congregations sending what they could to help their people put down roots out on the Texas plains. Other denominations pitched in with donations too. This was a community reaching toward something together.

And that spirit didn't stop at the dedication ceremony. For eleven years, that Presbyterian building also opened its doors to the Methodists and the Baptists. Three congregations, one roof, circuit pastors rotating their Sunday visits among the three.

You can picture it, a preacher riding into White Deer, never quite sure which flock he'd find in the pews that morning, but ready to preach all the same. They organized a Union Sunday School under that roof. A missionary society too.

And every offering, every coin dropped in every plate, was split equally among the three churches. Equal shares, no argument. The First Presbyterian Church building served as a worship center from 1909 all the way to 1969.

Sixty years of Sundays in that single structure. Then in 1978, the building was moved from this very site. Gone from where it stood, but not from the record.

That little church held three congregations together on the open plains, and it did it on shared generosity and rotating Sundays. White Deer's first church building. It was built by many, and it belonged to all of them.
