Kaufman County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to honor every word. Some places earn their names through commerce or conflict or the whims of a mapmaker. But Fox Cemetery out in Kaufman County, that one was earned through grief.

Joseph Fox was the man who set this ground aside. Born in London in the year 1800, he made his way eventually to Texas, to a place called Prospect. That's a journey worth pausing on: London to Prospect, Texas, though the marker doesn't tell us the road he walked to get there.

What it does tell us is what kind of man he was. A physician. A father.

And a man who, on the twenty-fourth of August, 1852, found himself burying his daughter. Her name was Sarah K. Fox.

And she was the first person laid to rest in the ground her father had set aside. Now, you think about that. A doctor (a man whose whole calling was to keep people living) carving out a piece of earth and placing his own child in it first.

There's a weight to that fact that no amount of storytelling needs to dress up. Joseph Fox lived on after that August day, practicing medicine, making his life in Prospect. He died there in 1872, and the marker is quiet on where he himself ended up resting.

What it does tell us is that many prominent early settlers of the area are interred in that cemetery he founded. And here's the part that might just be the most remarkable thing of all: the grounds are still cared for. By descendants.

By friends. More than a century and a half after a father dug the first grave for a daughter he couldn't save, people are still showing up to tend that place. Some debts don't expire.

And some ground, once made sacred, stays that way.
