Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Frey-Benignus House out in Waller County. Now, some stories start with a bang. This one starts with a Swiss immigrant, a German-born wife, and a whole lot of ambition arriving in Waller County in late 1889.
John Frey, born in 1857, and his wife Mary, born in 1862, didn't come empty-handed in spirit, even if what they built at the start was modest. A small two-room house. A barn.
A smokehouse. The bones of a family farm. You can almost picture it, two rooms, wide open Texas sky, and a plan.
Now here's where the story gets interesting. John and Mary Frey eventually had fifteen children. Fifteen.
And those two rooms were going to need some company in a hurry. So they added rooms as the family grew, one by one, the house stretching and expanding the way a good Texas family story tends to do. What stands today is described as an excellent example of a late nineteenth-century farmhouse, and it still features fine milled wood details, the kind of craftsmanship that tells you somebody cared about more than just four walls and a roof.
After John, who was born in 1857 and died in 1925, and Mary, born in 1862 and dying in 1933, had both passed, the house didn't leave the family. It passed to their daughter Margarete and her husband Louis Benignus. And that's how a two-room start became something worth remembering, a house that kept growing because the people inside it did too.
What the marker says
Swiss immigrant John Frey (1857-1925) and his German-born wife Mary (1862-1933) moved to Waller County in late 1889. They built a small two-room house, a barn, and smokehouse, and began a family farm. The couple eventually had fifteen children and added rooms to their home as their family grew. Now standing as an excellent example of a late 19th-century farmhouse, the house features fine milled wood details. Following the deaths of John and Mary Frey, the house became the property of their daughter, Margarete, and her husband Louis Benignus. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1990
