Duane's take

The way this marker tells it, here's the story of Frost Baptist Church as it stands in Navarro County. Back in July of 1890, a man named Reverend H. A.

Conway led a small group of Baptists together and established a congregation. Small is right. They started with about twenty charter members.

Twenty souls, a shared faith, and a whole lot of Texas summer heat. From that modest beginning, the church grew steadily over the years. Now, early on, worship services were held just once a month.

Once a month. You can imagine how much that Sunday meant when it finally came around. But the congregation kept growing, and eventually services were increased to twice monthly.

Then, in time, every single week. That first sanctuary went up right on this very site in 1890, the same year the congregation was founded. But by 1906, the church had outgrown it, and a larger structure rose to take its place.

That building served the people of Frost Baptist for years. Then 1930 arrived, and with it, a tornado. The structure was destroyed.

Gone. After that, the congregation erected a brick building, and that brick building carried the congregation forward all the way to 1979, when it was razed to make room for a new sanctuary. Three buildings on this ground.

A tornado in between. And through all of it, the same congregation, tracing its roots back to Reverend Conway and those twenty charter members who gathered in July of 1890 and decided this was worth building.

What the marker says

Led by the Rev. H. A. Conway, a small group of Baptists established this congregation in July 1890. Beginning with about twenty charter members, the church has grown steadily over the years. Early worship services were held once a month. Eventually, services were increased to twice monthly, and finally to every week. The first sanctuary, built on this site in 1890, was replaced by a larger structure in 1906. After it was destroyed by a tornado in 1930, a brick building was erected. It served the congregation until 1979, when it was razed to make room for a new sanctuary.
