Bell County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just the one passing it along. Back in 1882, out in Bell County, a congregation took root, planted there to serve the area's German population. They called it the Friedens Church of the Evangelical Association, and in case your German is a little rusty, Friedens means Peace.

A fitting name for a place of worship, you might say. Now, a congregation needs a home, and this one got a good piece of help putting one together. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway donated the land, and by 1883, a sanctuary was standing on it.

Wood frame construction, cedar post foundation, and if you look up at the lines of the building, you'll catch some elements of the Gothic style worked into the design. It's the kind of craftsmanship that doesn't make a lot of noise, it just stands there, quietly doing its job across the decades. The congregation's name changed over the years, settling into Grace United Methodist Church, but that 1883 building is still part of the story.

The marker calls it an important part of the area's diverse cultural heritage, and when you consider that it all started with a German-speaking congregation, a railway company's donated land, and a wood frame structure raised in 1883, well, that's a lot of history holding up one set of walls.
