Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Grove Hill Missionary Baptist Church out in Matagorda County. Now, some stories start with a deed or a battle, but this one starts with a name. An area near the Brown Plantation home site carried the name Grove Hill, and that name passed down to a Baptist church that would outlast nearly everything around it.
In 1884, the Reverend Jack Yates and London Branch came together and organized Grove Hill Baptist Church. Two men, one purpose, and the kind of foundation that tends to hold. That original church building did double duty from the start.
It wasn't just a place of worship. It was a school for the African American community, which means on any given week those walls held both prayer and learning, and that is no small thing to carry. Years went on, the congregation grew, and in 1919 a new church structure was built right here on this site.
Growth has a way of demanding more room, and Grove Hill answered that call. A Sunday School took shape. Then a music department.
A choir. A youth group. The pulpit area was enlarged.
A steeple went up. And standing apart from the main building, a detached bell tower was built, the kind of addition that says we are here, we are not going anywhere. By the time this marker was recorded in 1996, Grove Hill Missionary Baptist Church had been serving its community for over a hundred years.
Started by two men with a vision, grown into something the whole county could hear ringing.
What the marker says
Named for an area near the Brown Plantation home site, Grove Hill Baptist Church was organized in 1884 by the Rev. Jack Yates and London Branch. The original church building also served as a school for the African American community. A new church structure was built on this site in 1919. As the congregation expanded, a Sunday School, music department, choir and youth group were established. Improvements to the building included enlarging the pulpit area, and building a steeple and a detached bell tower. The church continues to serve the community as it has for over 100 years. (1996)
