Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say. Now, some stories arrive with thunderclaps and long rosters of names. And then there are the ones that arrive quiet, the way a ridge at dusk goes still.
Harmony Ridge Cemetery, out here in San Saba County, is one of the quiet ones. Established in 1878. That's the whole of what the record gives us, and sometimes that's enough.
Eighteen seventy-eight. You stop and sit with that a moment. The Hill Country was a different kind of place then, and somebody, some community, decided this ridge was where they would keep their people.
Designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2011. More than a century passed between that founding and that recognition, and the ground kept its silence through all of it. There's something to be said for a place that doesn't need to explain itself.
Harmony Ridge has been doing its work since 1878, and it'll keep right on doing it long after the rest of us have moved along down the road.
