Kendall County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my take on what the official marker has to say about the Henry J. Graham Building in Kendall County. Now, Main Street in Boerne has seen a lot come and go, but every now and then a building just refuses to quit.

This one goes back to the late nineteenth century, when a man named Henry J. Graham put up an office right there on Main Street. Real estate, insurance, private banking.

If you had money moving through Boerne, there was a decent chance it passed through Henry Graham's hands. Graham himself was something of an unusual figure for a Texas Hill Country town. Born in Brazil, of all places, he made his way to Boerne in the 1870s.

And once he arrived, he was not the kind of man to sit quietly in the back row. He served as tax assessor for Kendall County. He served as deputy sheriff for Kendall County.

Community leader, the marker calls him, and by the look of that resume, it earned. He was born in 1854 and lived all the way to 1936, long enough to see that county change plenty of times over. Now, the building he put up had its own restless streak.

After Graham's original office days were done, it housed a variety of business establishments, the marker says, which is a polite way of noting the place kept reinventing itself. And at some point it was actually moved. Once.

Then moved again, landing right where it stands today, in 1984. A man born in Brazil builds an office on a Texas Main Street, serves his county in two different official capacities, and then the building itself picks up and walks across town. Twice.

Some legacies stay put. Some just keep on movin'.

What the marker says

Constructed on Main Street in the late nineteenth century, this building first served as an office for the real estate, insurance, and private banking interests of Henry J. Graham (1854-1936). Born in Brazil, Graham came to Boerne in the 1870s. He was an active community leader and served as both tax assessor and deputy sheriff for Kendall County. His original office building later housed a variety of business establishments and was moved once before being relocated here in 1984.
