Hockley County, Texas

Duane's take

The official marker for Hockley County tells it like this, and I'm just the voice bringin' it down the road to you. Now, out here on the South Plains, the land has a long memory. This stretch of West Texas was carved from Young and Bexar territories — two enormous pieces of an enormous state — and on August 21, 1876, the Texas legislature drew a line and called it Hockley County.

Just like that, on paper anyway, a county was born. I say on paper, because here's the thing about Hockley County that not every county can claim: it sat there, official and named and legally real, for nearly half a century before anybody got around to organizing it. February 19, 1921 — that's when the county finally got itself organized.

The land was patient. The people, when they arrived, were ready. Now, the name.

This county carries the name of George W. Hockley, and that name earned its place in Texas history the hard way. Hockley commanded the artillery at San Jacinto.

The artillery. At San Jacinto. If you know anything about that battle, you understand what that means — the cannon fire at San Jacinto is the kind of thing that echoes across centuries.

After the Republic of Texas stood on its own feet, Hockley served as Secretary of War of that Republic. He died in 1851. And then there's the county seat — Levelland, sitting out there flat and steady as the name suggests.

But it wasn't always called Levelland. Until 1912, folks knew it as Hockley City. Then the name changed, the county name stayed, and Levelland has been carrying the seat of Hockley County ever since.

Founded in honor of a man who aimed the guns at San Jacinto, organized on a cold February day in 1921, and anchored by a town that quietly changed its own name right in the middle of it all — Hockley County doesn't need to shout. The history speaks plenty loud on its own.
