Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Holy Rosary Catholic Parish in Fort Bend County. Now settle in, because this congregation has been through some things. It all starts in 1895, when a woman named Arabella Dorigan donated two lots for the building of a Catholic church in Rosenberg.

Two lots. A gift, and a promise. But a church doesn't rise overnight, and for years the faithful gathered where they could, Mass held periodically in other buildings, making do with borrowed spaces and borrowed roofs.

Then came 1911, and finally, a home of their own. A wooden church and rectory went up at Avenue H and 6th Street. You can almost picture it, can't you?

Fresh lumber, a proper address, roots going down at last. But here's where the story takes a hard turn. In 1924, fire destroyed that church.

Just like that, what it took years to build was gone. Now, some congregations might have scattered. Not this one.

The very next year, 1925, a new church rose in its place, this time Mission style stucco, built to last a little longer than the last one. It lasted into the 1950s, when those structures were demolished and the property was sold. Three decades, and then, change again.

But by then, something bigger was already in motion. The third church, and this one they were going to get right, was designed by Mark Lemmon in the Gothic Revival style. Julius and Frances Gubbels donated 25 acres west of town, and on that land the new church was built and dedicated in 1954.

Twenty-five acres. Room to breathe. Room to grow.

And grow it did. Over the years a school, started in the 1930s, took shape alongside a rectory, a bell tower, a grotto, a parish life center, and other structures, all rising on that same donated ground. What began with two lots and a woman's generosity in 1895 became, acre by acre and decade by decade, something that Arabella Dorigan might not have dared imagine, but probably hoped for all along.

What the marker says

IN 1895, ARABELLA DORIGAN DONATED TWO LOTS FOR THE BUILDING OF A CATHOLIC CHURCH IN ROSENBERG. MASS WAS HELD PERIODICALLY IN OTHER BUILDINGS UNTIL 1911, WHEN A WOODEN CHURCH AND RECTORY WERE BUILT AT AVENUE H AND 6TH STREET. A FIRE DESTROYED THE CHURCH IN 1924, AND A NEW MISSION STYLE STUCCO CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1925. IN THE 1950s THE STRUCTURES WERE DEMOLISHED, AND THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD. THE THIRD CHURCH, DESIGNED BY MARK LEMMON IN THE GOTHIC REVIVAL STYLE, WAS BUILT WEST OF TOWN ON 25 ACRES DONATED BY JULIUS AND FRANCES GUBBELS AND WAS DEDICATED IN 1954. OVER THE YEARS A SCHOOL, STARTED IN THE 1930s, A RECTORY, A BELL TOWER, A GROTTO, A PARISH LIFE CENTER AND OTHER STRUCTURES HAVE BEEN BUILT AT THIS SITE.
