Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Somewhere in Washington County there stands a house — built in 1845 — and the man who built it, well, he's the kind of figure that makes you stop and reckon with what one life can hold. His name was Jerome B.
Robertson, born in 1815, gone in 1891, and in between those two years he managed to pack in enough history for about four ordinary men. Now, the marker calls him General, and by the end of this you'll understand why that title fits like a glove. But let's start at the beginning — or close to it.
The year is 1836, and a young Jerome B. Robertson is already serving as a captain in the army of the Republic of Texas. The Republic.
Not the state — the Republic. Texas was its own nation, and Robertson was out there doing his part to keep it that way. Six years later, 1842, he's back at it — captain again, this time in the Somervell Expedition.
The man knew how to show up when things got serious. Then came the quieter work, if you can call it that — representing his neighbors in the Texas Legislature, first as a representative, then rising to senator. But the story wasn't finished with him yet.
When the Civil War came, Jerome B. Robertson put on a general's uniform — Brigadier General, commanding Hood's Brigade for the Confederacy. Hood's Brigade.
That name carried weight across the South. And through it all, there was this house, built in 1845, anchoring him to Washington County like a quiet reminder of everything he was building toward and coming home to. The State of Texas saw fit to erect a marker here in 1936, and standing beside it, you get the feeling the old general would've appreciated the recognition — and then probably told you he was just doing what needed doing.
