Here's how the official marker tells it, and it's worth the tellin'. Out in Wise County, not far from a landmark hill the old-timers called Lone Mound, thirty-five charter members got together in 1874 and organized Hopewell Baptist Church. Thirty-five souls, a shared conviction, and a piece of Texas ground.

That's how you build something meant to last. Now, their first building stood about a mile south, right near Hopewell Cemetery, which, if you think about it, puts the congregation in close company with the generations that came before them. Then in 1887, the church picked up and moved to where it stands today, near that same Lone Mound landmark.

And just twelve years after that, in 1899, the members built themselves a brand-new sanctuary. A proper place to gather. In those early years, worship was a once-a-month affair.

Circuit riding preachers made their rounds, rolling into the community one Sunday a month to tend to the flock. That was the rhythm of life out here, you waited, you prepared, and when Sunday came, you made it count. By 1950, though, the congregation had grown into weekly services.

What was once a monthly occasion became a weekly anchor. And Hopewell wasn't just about Sunday mornings. The congregation kept its focus on missions and youth activities, and sitting right alongside the Lone Mound School, that sanctuary became a genuine focal point for the whole community.

A gathering place, for residents, for neighbors, for anyone who needed a place to belong. Over a century and a half after those thirty-five founders made their covenant in Wise County, Hopewell Baptist Church is still standing, still serving, still leading. Some things you build to last, and some things, it turns out, last because they were always worth building.

What the marker says

In 1874, 35 charter members organized Hopewell Baptist Church. The congregation’s first building was located about one mile south at Hopewell Cemetery. In 1887, the church moved here, near the Landmark Hill named Lone Mound. Members built a new sanctuary in 1899, and were first ministered to by circuit riding preachers, meeting one Sunday a month for worship; by 1950, the congregation met weekly. The congregation’s focus has included missions and youth activities. Located near the Lone Mound School, Hopewell Baptist Church was a focal point for the community, and the sanctuary has long been a gathering place for residents. Today, Hopewell Baptist Church continues to be a spiritual leader in Wise County.
