Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna give it to you straight with a little Texas lean on it. Way back in the fall of 1886, something was stirrin' on the campus of Southwestern University. A group of young men had formed themselves into something unofficial, something the university hadn't exactly blessed yet.

They were operating in that particular gray zone that college men throughout history have found so comfortable, where the rules are more of a suggestion than a fence. That group was reaching toward something bigger: the Iota Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. On October 12, 1886, Iota was chartered.

Then, just three days later, on October 15, 1886, four men stepped forward and made it real. Iverson B. Lane.

Jesse C. Baker. Jasper B.

Gibbs. And John S. Moss.

Those four initiations turned a charter into an official chapter. Now you'd think that would've settled things with the university. You would be wrong.

Southwestern University itself didn't extend recognition until June 20, 1887, a good several months after those four men had already committed themselves to the star and crescent, the symbol of Kappa Sigma. The chapter had been wearing that symbol before the institution caught up with them. When Iota was chartered, it became the 27th chapter in the United States and only the second organized in the entire state of Texas.

Second in Texas. That's a distinction worth sayin' out loud on a road trip. In the century that followed, over 975 members wore that star and crescent, carrying forward something that started as an unauthorized gathering of young men on a campus in Williamson County.

They started without permission. They ended up in the history books.
