Houston County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just the same. Now, there are cemeteries, and then there are cemeteries. The kind that don't just hold the dead, they hold the whole shape of a community.

Ivie Cemetery, out in Houston County, is that second kind. It started in 1861, with the burial of Henry G. Ivie himself, born in 1811, an early settler in the southeastern part of the county.

That first interment set the tone for everything that followed. The ground chosen was part of Henry's own holdings, land that fell within the Stephen English Survey. He'd put down roots there, and then, in the way of things, the roots went deeper than he ever walked.

Over time, that quiet piece of ground became the final resting place for residents of not just one county, but a whole three-county area centered around what folks came to call the Ivie Community. Think about that for a moment. People from across three counties, finding their way to the same patch of southeastern Houston County soil.

Right next door, land was being used for school and religious purposes, and for many years the cemetery kept close company with the Ivie Baptist Church. A burial ground, a schoolhouse, a church, all gathered together the way rural communities had to gather, tight and purposeful, making the most of what they had. Today Ivie Cemetery stands as a reminder of early rural settlement and the pioneers who shaped it, pioneers like one Henry G.

Ivie, who arrived early, stayed, and in a very real sense, never left.

What the marker says

This cemetery began in 1861 with the interment of Henry G. Ivie (b. 1811), an early settler in southeastern Houston County. It is located on property that was part of his holdings in the Stephen English Survey. The site served as a burial ground for residents of a three-county area centered around the Ivie Community. Located adjacent to land once used for school and religious purposes, the cemetery was associated with the Ivie Baptist Church for many years. Today Ivie Cemetery serves as a reminder of early rural settlement and its pioneers.
