Orange County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Jackson-Hustmyre House in Orange County. Now settle in, because this one's about a house that means business, literally. Henry B.

Jackson, a prominent local banker and businessman, purchased this property in 1902, and he didn't let the grass grow under his feet. He built this home soon after, and when a banker builds himself a house, you can bet it's going to make a statement. Yellow pine lumber, a variety of shingling, and crowning it all, a gazebo-like balcony with a conical roof and all the fine detailing of the Queen Anne style.

That balcony alone probably made every neighbor on the street reconsider their own roofline. Now, Jackson held onto this place until 1909, at which point he sold it to Frank W. Hustmyre.

And Frank W. Hustmyre was no ordinary buyer. The man was Vice President of the Orange National Bank and, if that weren't enough, manager and secretary-treasurer of the Orange Grocery Co.

Vice President of the bank and running the grocery operation. Some folks just don't believe in a slow Tuesday. So there you have it.

Two prominent men, one fine house, yellow pine and Queen Anne style standing tall in Orange County. The Jackson-Hustmyre House didn't just shelter its owners. It kept the company of the people who were keeping the town running.
