Duane's take

The official marker's the word on this one, and here's how I tell it. John S. Roberts.

Now that name might not ring as loud as some others in the Texas story, but friend, when you start tracing the thread of what this man was present for, you begin to understand that some men just have a way of showing up exactly where history needs them most. Born in Virginia on July 13, 1796, Roberts didn't stay put long enough to let the East Coast define him. By 1826 he was sheriff in Natchitoches, Louisiana — which tells you something right there.

A man who takes the sheriff's job on the Louisiana frontier in 1826 is not a man who shies from trouble. He's a man who walks toward it. And walk toward it he did.

He became one of the leaders in the Battle of Nacogdoches — right there in the town that now marks his memory with stone. Then came 1835, and 1835 was not a quiet year. Roberts was a member of the Consultation that year, the body of men who were hammering out the shape of what Texas might become.

And if that weren't enough to fill a single year, he also commanded the Nacogdoches Company in the storming of Bexar. Commanded it. Led men through that fight.

And then — then — he put his name to the Texas Declaration of Independence. Sheriff. Battle leader.

Delegate. Commander. Signer.

One man, one signature, one long trail from Virginia to the place where Texas declared itself free. He died on August 9, 1871, and beside him through all of it was his wife Harriet Roberts, born April 7, 1796, who outlasted him and left this world on April 5, 1874. The State of Texas erected this marker in 1936, which feels about right — some debts take a while to pay, but they do get paid.

John S. Roberts signed his name to Texas. Texas signed back.
