Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to give it its due. Now, there are cemeteries, and then there are cemeteries. Some of them, they've got whole volumes written about them.
Names carved deep, dates going back centuries, stories so thick you could trip over them. And then there's the Karl Haas Cemetery out here in Comal County. Established in 1867.
That's it. That's what we know. Designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2018.
Two dates and a name, standing out here quiet as the hill country itself. But think about what 1867 means for a moment. The war just finished tearing everything apart.
Texas is picking itself up off the ground. And somebody, somewhere, was already thinking about a place to lay their people to rest. Somebody named Haas.
And that ground has held its silence ever since. Sometimes the shortest story is the one that stays with you longest.
