Hunt County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'll tell it to you. Way out in Hunt County, there's a church with a story that starts small and builds, the way the best stories do. It began in 1892 as a Methodist Mission Sunday School.

Not a full church yet, just a gathering of folks who believed something worth starting was worth showing up for. Four years later, on November 8, 1896, it was chartered as a proper church, and it was named in honor of Bishop H. H.

Kavanaugh. That name carried weight, and they put it on the building accordingly. The first sanctuary went up right on this very site, a four-room brick building.

Modest, sturdy, intentional. The kind of place that says we're here, and we mean it. But congregations have a way of growing when a community believes in what they're building together, and before long that four-room building wasn't enough.

So they built again. A larger facility went up and was dedicated in 1924, and this time they didn't hold back. Classical revival style.

Fine brickwork. A raised temple front that stands up and announces itself to anyone passing by. And then there are the windows.

Fifty art glass windows. Fifty. You don't put fifty art glass windows in a building unless you want the light itself to be part of the worship.

That's not construction, that's a statement. From a mission Sunday school in 1892 to a classical revival landmark with fifty windows catching the Texas light, Kavanaugh Methodist Church didn't just grow. It became something worth stopping for.

What the marker says

Founded as a Methodist Mission Sunday School in 1892, this church was chartered on November 8, 1896, and named in honor of Bishop H. H. Kavanaugh. The first sanctuary was a 4-room brick building erected on this site. A larger facility was needed for the growing congregation and this structure was built and dedicated in 1924. This classical revival style building features fine brickwork, a raised temple front, and 50 art glass windows. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1995
