Duane's take

Here's the official marker's story, as best as I can tell it. The Ladonia Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. had roots reaching back to the mid-nineteenth century, which means by the time this congregation decided to build something permanent, they had history behind them. Real history.

The kind that makes you want to build something worthy of it. And so, between 1910 and 1912, they did exactly that. The building contract went to W.

H. Markley of Commerce, signed for six thousand four hundred dollars. Now, you might think that's modest.

But what Markley delivered was anything but. What rose up on that lot was a fine example of twentieth century Mission Revival style, adapted, and this is the interesting part, adapted to an ecclesiastical mode. That's a fancy way of saying somebody took an architectural tradition and made it speak the language of a church.

The structure came out with fine detailing, careful proportions, and a simplicity of form that tends to stick with you. The kind of building that doesn't shout, but doesn't whisper either. It just stands.

And for decades, it did exactly that, holding a congregation together under its roof. But by 1976, that congregation was dissolved. The building remained, though.

Then in 1997, the character-defining central parapet, the crown of the whole composition, was reconstructed. Some things are worth bringing back. That parapet is one of them.
