Hunt County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna give it to you straight with a little room to breathe. Way out in Hunt County, there's a church that's been holding its ground since before the Civil War even had a chance to start. Lone Oak Baptist Church.

Organized in 1858 by two men, W. M. Pickett and Benj.

Watson, which is already the kind of founding that deserves a moment of quiet respect. Two names, one mission, and a congregation that was about to take root in Texas soil. Now, every church worth its salt has its charter members, and this one had a fine roll call.

Thos. Hooker stepped up as the first pastor. Mr. and Mrs.

Jas. Simpson were there. N.

T. Featherston. Jane Pitts.

Harriet Lively. And Mr. and Mrs. Wm.

McBride, who did something that a lot of folks talk about but not nearly enough actually do. They gave the site for the first church. The land itself.

That's the kind of generosity that tends to hold a community together for generations. And that first church stood on that gifted ground, a congregation gathering, worshiping, building something that mattered. Then it burned.

The marker doesn't linger on it, and neither will I, but that single word carries weight. It burned. And here is where the story turns, because what happened next is what separates a congregation from a community.

They built again. The present church went up in 1899, and it's still standing in Hunt County today, which means that building has been weathering Texas summers and Texas storms for well over a century. Started by two men.

Grounded by a family's gift of land. Rebuilt after fire. That's not just a church.

That's a testament.
