Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Ludwig Hein came to Texas from Germany in 1877, and right from the start, you get the sense this was a man who planted roots deep. Born in 1855, he found his way to the Hill Country, married Rosa Treiber of Waring, and before the turn of the century, before 1900, he had built this home for his family.

Not just any home, either. A Victorian house, with a front bay window and bracketed porch supports, the kind of craftsmanship that says: I'm not going anywhere. Right next door, Hein ran a blacksmith shop, so you can imagine the rhythm of those days, the clang of iron, the smell of the forge, a family growing up in the shadow of honest work.

Then in 1914, the family moved to San Antonio, and Ludwig Hein passed from this world in 1933. But the house? The house was just getting started.

Now, every town has a nerve center. A place where the gossip flows, where news travels, where the whole community somehow converges. In Comfort, Texas, that place was right here.

From 1923 to 1955, the local telephone switchboard was housed in this home, and that is not a metaphor. That is the marker's own words: the nerve center of Comfort. Every call, every connection, every piece of urgent news passing through these walls, through that bay window's light, under those bracketed porch supports.

Ludwig Hein built a home. Comfort made it the heart of the whole conversation.

What the marker says

Ludwig Hein (1855-1933) came to Texas from Germany in 1877. He married Rosa Treiber of Waring and built this home for his family before 1900. Hein operated a blacksmith shop next door until the family moved to San Antonio in 1914. The home was known as the "nerve center" of Comfort when the local telephone switchboard was housed here from 1923 to 1955. Features of the Victorian house include its front bay window and bracketed porch supports. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1987
