Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just passing it along. There's a house sitting in Colorado County that has been quietly outlasting everyone who doubted it since eighteen sixty-nine. That was the year Charles Mainge built what the record calls a raised cottage with a parapeted balustrade.
Now say that three times fast on a dusty road. It means the place had style from the very beginning. Pine siding, pine floors.
Interior walls of cypress. And the foundation, the fireplaces, all of it resting on handmade bricks. Every nail driven into that structure was square.
Not the wire nails you'd grab off a shelf today. Square nails, cut and shaped by hand, holding the whole thing together like it had something to prove. The house passed through several short-term ownerships over the decades, nobody staying long enough to leave their name on the story.
Then in nineteen ten, a man named R. H. Walther came along.
Walther was a bookkeeper and a merchant, the kind of man who understood ledgers and value, and he understood what he was looking at. He bought the house. He stayed.
He went on to serve on the staff of the county tax collector from nineteen fourteen to nineteen twenty-six. And when his chapter closed, the house didn't drift back into those revolving short-term hands. His daughters, Grace and Rosanna Walther, took ownership and set about preserving it.
Handmade bricks, square nails, cypress walls, and all. Some houses get passed around until nobody remembers who built them. This one held on until the right people decided it was worth remembering.
What the marker says
Raised cottage with parapeted balustrade. Built 1869 by Charles Mainge. Siding and floors are of pine; interior walls, cypress. Foundations and fireplaces are of handmade bricks. Square nails were used in construction. Several short-term ownerships were followed by sale in 1910 to R. H. Walther, a bookkeeper and merchant, who served 1914-26 on staff of county tax collector. His daughters Grace and Rosanna Walther now own, preserve house. RTHL - 1973
