Duane's take
Well, I'm telling this one just like the marker tells it, so let's get into it. Now, out here in Matagorda County, there's a story about a building that did more than most buildings ever dream of doing. It started as a hall, built in 1875, out at a place called Deming's Bridge, close by the Pierce Ranch.
John Pierce and his Masonic brothers put it up, and right from the start, that structure had ambitions. See, the first floor wasn't just for lodge business. No, the Baptists used it as a church, and the whole community used it as a gathering hall.
One building, several callings. That's a working building. That's a building earning its keep.
Now here's where the story takes a turn. Around 1903, the town of Blessing was founded, and that hall, that sturdy survivor from 1875, it moved. The whole thing picked up and relocated to meet the new town where it was.
A building that had already served as a Masonic lodge, a Baptist church, and a community hall, and it still had somewhere to be. Masonic Lodge number four-eleven, Matagorda County. Some things are built to last, and some things are built to travel.
This one managed both.
