McLennan County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Somewhere out in McLennan County, there's a little church with a story that starts, as so many Texas stories do, with people who came a long way and brought everything they had with them. We're talking about the Meier Settlement Methodist Church, and if you blink driving past it, you'll miss about a hundred and thirty years of community holding itself together.

The marker lays it out, so let's walk through it. Back in 1887, members of the Methodist Congregation in nearby Perry decided they needed something of their own. They founded what they first called the Zion Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

And they didn't waste any time, either. Construction of a sanctuary began on March 5, 1887. Mark that date down.

These folks had a plan and they were movin. Now here's the thing about this congregation that gives the whole story its particular texture. The membership was made up of German immigrants.

And when they gathered to worship, they did it in the language they carried across an ocean and across however many miles of Texas scrubland it took to get here. Every service, every hymn, every sermon, conducted entirely in German. That went on until 1922.

Think about what that means for a community, a sanctuary where the words of worship sound like home. And it wasn't just a church, either. The building served as a public schoolhouse for a time, with the pastors themselves stepping up as teachers.

The same men leading the flock on Sunday were standing at the front of a classroom the rest of the week. Then in 1915, the name changed to Meier Settlement Methodist Church, the name it still carries. And here's the line on the marker that I think lands harder than any dramatic flourish I could cook up.

It continues to serve the community. No past tense. No eulogy.

Just a church, still standing, still at it.
