Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Rusk County, there's a congregation with roots that go back further than most folks realize, and the story starts, as so many good Texas stories do, with people who weren't afraid to begin with almost nothing. Several members of Ebenezer Baptist Church, a congregation that had itself been organized nearby back in 1884, decided the land needed another house of faith.
So in 1894, they established what they called Missionary Springs Baptist Church. Now that name, Missionary Springs, it wasn't chosen at random. There were actual springs at the site where those early worshippers first gathered, holding what they called brush arbor services.
Picture that: open sky for a ceiling, the sound of water nearby, and a congregation finding its footing on faith alone. Eight years passed from that founding before the church called its first pastor. In 1902, the Reverend William Hendrix answered that call, becoming the first man to officially shepherd this flock.
That same year, 1902, the church joined the Southern Baptist Association, planting itself firmly into a broader community of believers. And then, around 1905, they built something lasting. A frame sanctuary, erected right at this site, gave the congregation walls and a roof and a place that said: we are here, and we intend to stay.
By around 1918, the name had shifted slightly. Missionary Springs became Mission Springs Baptist Church, a small change in letters that carried the work right on forward. New facilities came over the years.
The Sunday School kept going. Youth groups took root. And the congregation's support of home and foreign missions, that thread woven in from the very beginning, never broke.
Some churches flash bright and fade. This one just kept on. This marker was part of the Sesquicentennial of Texas Statehood, 1845 to 1995, a reminder that the story of Texas is really just a whole lot of smaller stories, told by people who showed up and stayed.
