Erath County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Out here in Erath County, there's a place called Morgan Mill, named for an early settler by the name of George Bryan Morgan. The community traces its roots back to the mid-19th century, which means people were putting down stakes here when the land was still finding its shape.

By 1877, Morgan Mill had itself a post office, which in those days was about as close to a town being real as anything official could make it. Now, churches had been gathering folks together out here for some time, but in the summers they did it the old way: under a brush arbor. Picture that.

Several congregations, different churches, different folks, all coming together under a roof made of branches and sky, for revivals and other meetings. There's something about a brush arbor that keeps a person honest. No walls to hide behind.

Just the preaching and the heat and your neighbors sitting close enough that you can't pretend you're somewhere else. That arrangement carried on until 1910, and then the community made a decision. They built something permanent.

A real structure, right there, and they called it the Morgan Mill Tabernacle. It wasn't just for the churches, either. The local school used it.

Community organizations used it. It was the kind of place a small town pours itself into, because when you only have one gathering place, you make it count. And here's the part that lands.

That tabernacle is still standing. Still in use as a community gathering place. George Bryan Morgan put his name on this land in the mid-1800s, a brush arbor held this community together summer after summer, and the building that replaced it in 1910 is still doing the work.

Some things, when they're built right, just refuse to stop.

What the marker says

The community of Morgan Mill, named for early settler George Bryan Morgan, traces its history to the mid-19th century. A post office was established in 1877. Several community church congregations shared a brush arbor in the summers for revivals and other meetings. In 1910 the brush arbor was replaced with this permanent structure, named the Morgan Mill Tabernacle. In addition to serving the churches, the tabernacle also was used by the local school and other community organizations. It remains in use as a community gathering place. (1994)
