Hopkins County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna do my best to honor every word. Back in 1868, African-American residents in the old Tarrant Settlement started gathering for worship. No fancy building, no grand announcement.

Just people coming together, which, if you think about it, is how the most lasting things usually begin. Under the Reverend Mike Wiggins, that gathering grew into something with a name and a mission: Old Tarrant Baptist Church. Then came 1876, and with it a move.

Hopkins County had a newly designated county seat, Sulphur Springs, and the congregation set down roots at the intersection of Front and Fuller Streets. New address, same calling. For over a hundred years, the members reached out to the community, steady as the East Texas sun.

But 1974 brought a trial that would have stopped a lesser congregation cold. A fire destroyed the church. Not damaged.

Destroyed. Now, what happened next is the part worth leanin' in for. The building was replaced, and it wasn't done alone.

Other churches pitched in. Local businesses pitched in. The community that this congregation had spent over a century serving turned right around and served them back.

That's not nothing. That's a whole sermon right there. Today, Morning Chapel Missionary Baptist Church still stands in Sulphur Springs, still a spiritual and social leader for the city and the surrounding area.

Started in a settlement, survived a fire, rebuilt by neighbors. Some stories end. This one just keeps going.

What the marker says

IN 1868, AFRICAN-AMERICAN RESIDENTS BEGAN MEETING FOR WORSHIP IN THE OLD TARRANT SETTLEMENT. UNDER THE REV. MIKE WIGGINS, THEY ESTABLISHED OLD TARRANT BAPTIST CHURCH. IN 1876, THE CONGREGATION MOVED TO THE INTERSECTION OF FRONT AND FULLER STREETS IN THE NEWLY DESIGNATED HOPKINS COUNTY SEAT OF SULPHUR SPRINGS. MEMBERS HAVE REACHED OUT TO THE COMMUNITY SINCE THEN. A 1974 FIRE DESTROYED THE CHURCH; THE BUILDING WAS REPLACED LARGELY THROUGH FUNDS RAISED BY OTHER CHURCHES AND BY LOCAL BUSINESSES. TODAY, MORNING CHAPEL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH CONTINUES TO BE A SPIRITUAL AND SOCIAL LEADER IN SULPHUR SPRINGS AND THE SURROUNDING AREA.
