Mills County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in the community of North Bennett, Mills County, something took root in July of 1899. Nineteen charter members came together and organized the Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church.

Nineteen people. You might think that's a modest number, but those nineteen souls meant business. They adopted the articles of faith of the Old Harmony Baptist Association, and they called Elder W.

W. Fowler to serve as their first pastor. They had a name, they had a faith, and they had a leader.

What they still needed was land. They got that too, in 1901, when the church purchased fifteen acres, enough ground for a house of worship and a cemetery both. Now here's a detail worth slowing down for.

That church building didn't just serve one flock. It doubled as a schoolhouse, and it opened its doors to other denominations as well. One building carrying that much of a community's weight, that tells you something about the kind of place North Bennett was.

The years rolled on, and the community faced what a lot of small Texas communities faced. Area population declined during World War Two, and by 1999, the church that had started with nineteen spirited charter members was down to four. Four members.

The arithmetic of time can be a quiet, sobering thing. But here is where the story refuses to end on a low note. That cemetery, sitting on the same land the church purchased back in 1901, had grown to more than a hundred and fifty graves by 1999, and it still serves the entire community.

Charter members are buried there. Early settlers of North Bennett are buried there. Veterans of the United States Armed Forces are buried there.

The membership rolls may have thinned, but the ground beneath Mount Olive holds a whole community's story, and it is still holding.

What the marker says

Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church was organized in July 1899 with nineteen charter members in the community of North Bennett. The new church adopted the articles of faith of the Old Harmony Baptist Association and called Elder W. W. Fowler as first pastor. The church purchased 15 acres of land in 1901 for a house of worship and cemetery. The church building also was used as a school-house and was shared with other denominations. Area population declined during World War ll, and by 1999 the church had four members. In addition to several of the church's charter members, many of the early settlers of the community are interred here, as are veterans of the U. S. Armed Forces. With more than 150 graves in 1999, the cemetery continues to serve the entire community. (1999)
