Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Mount Zion Cemetery, and I'll give it to you straight. Out here in Brazoria County, there's a piece of ground that carries quiet weight. Mount Zion Cemetery.
Established in 1939, when the world beyond these Texas fields was movin' fast and loud, somebody chose this spot for stillness. For memory. For the kind of permanence that outlasts just about everything else.
Cemeteries have a way of doin' that. They hold the names the rest of the world might forget. They keep the count when no one else is countin'.
Mount Zion has been keepin' that faith since 1939, and in 2011, the state of Texas took official notice, designating it a Historic Texas Cemetery. Two dates. That's the whole span of the marker's tellin'.
But between 1939 and a historic designation in 2011, there is a cemetery that did exactly what it was meant to do. It endured. And out here on the road, sometimes that's the whole story worth tellin'.
