Nacogdoches County, Texas

Duane's take

The way the marker tells it, here's the story of Nacogdoches County. Now, some places just seem to pull people in, century after century, like the land itself has opinions about who ought to be standing on it. Nacogdoches County is exactly that kind of place.

Before any European boot touched the East Texas soil, this was home to the Nacogdoches Indians, who held the territory in the seventeenth century. That's where the story starts. The Spanish arrived in 1716, planting settlements and staking their claim in this deep green corner of the continent.

But holding on to it, well, that was a different matter. Through the eighteenth century, those settlements were settled and abandoned, settled and abandoned, because the French had their own ideas about where their territory ended. The pressure from French encroachment kept this land in a kind of restless limbo, changing hands in spirit if not always on paper.

Then came 1827, and Nacogdoches found itself at the center of something that would echo through Texas history, the Fredonian Rebellion. The scene of it, right here. The ground had barely settled from that episode when the wheels of governance started turning again.

In 1832, under the Mexican Government, the area organized itself as a municipality. That was just the beginning of a rapid transformation. On March 17, 1836, Nacogdoches County was created as a county, and by May 24, 1837, it was fully organized.

And the county seat? That would be Nacogdoches itself, a town established back in 1779, which took its seat of power in 1836. Century after century, that same ground kept calling people back.

Some places just have that pull.
