Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Way back in 1892, a congregation began taking shape out in Fort Bend County. They were German Methodist Episcopalians, North branch, and they were serious about their faith.
The man who got it all started was the Rev. Jacob Ott, a pioneer Methodist missionary, and he founded this church from the ground up. In the early going, there was no building to speak of.
Worship happened in private homes, which, if you think about it, is about as close to the roots of the faith as you can get. Just folks gathered together, making do. Then in 1896, the congregation took a concrete step.
They purchased five acres of land near Needville, and the very next year they built their first sanctuary. Something to call their own, standing on ground they owned. Now here's a detail worth sittin' with.
Church services and records were conducted in the German language, all the way into the 1930s. Decades of sermons, hymns, and record books, all in German. That tells you something about who these people were and how tightly they held onto what they carried with them.
Then came 1927, and the congregation made its move into Needville itself, building the present sanctuary that still stands. The story keeps rolling right along from there. In 1968, the name was changed to Needville United Methodist Church.
Different name, different era. Same congregation, tracing a line all the way back to 1892 and the Rev. Jacob Ott going door to door, or rather, home to home.
