Scurry County, Texas

Duane's take

The way the official marker tells it, here's the story of O. P. 'Pack' Wolf — and friend, it's one worth hearin'. Now, Scurry County has seen its share of characters, but every now and then a man comes along who seems built specifically for the moment he walks into.

Pack Wolf was that kind of man. He was born in Burnet County in 1857, and by the time the world caught up with what he was, he'd already made up his mind about a few things — chief among them being law and order. That wasn't just a preference for Pack Wolf.

That was a creed. The marker says so plain as day: his creed was Law and Order, capital L, capital O. In 1906, Pack Wolf became city marshal of Snyder.

Now, hold that date in your mind for a second, because what was happening in Snyder around that time was the kind of thing that tests a town's character. Railroad money was pourin' in. Land boom fever had people comin' from every direction, and with that kind of energy comes chaos — the sort of chaos that either breaks a place or makes it.

Pack Wolf was apparently the answer to that particular question. The marker says he brought organized law to the railroad and land boom era. Not just law — organized law.

There's a difference, and anybody who's seen a boomtown knows exactly what that difference feels like. He also served as a Special Texas Ranger, which tells you something about the reach of his reputation. You don't get that kind of call unless people have noticed what you're made of.

And the man never backed down from a fight. That's not embellishment — that's what the marker says. Never.

That's a strong word, and Pack Wolf apparently earned every letter of it. He held that marshal's post from 1906 all the way through 1926. Twenty years of not backin' down.

He passed in 1927. But before he did, he donated Wolf Park to the community — a piece of himself left behind for Snyder to keep. Law and Order.

That was his creed, and by all accounts, Pack Wolf lived every day of it.
