Tyler County, Texas

Duane's take

The way the marker tells it, here's the story of the original site of Bethel Baptist Church. Three names you want to remember: Thomas Rock, Milton McQueen, and Mrs. Mary Parsons.

Those were the organizers, the founding three, the folks who looked out across Tyler County and decided something needed to be built, in spirit if not yet in timber. The first pastor called to lead the congregation was the Reverend J. B.

Masterson. And what they had for a sanctuary, at least to begin with, was the courthouse. That's right, they gathered where the law sat, bowed their heads where the gavel fell, and made it work until they could do better.

This was the first church in the county, which means every hymn sung and every word preached in that courthouse carried the full weight of a beginning. Then came 1852, and a proper church building rose to take the courthouse's place. Something built for the purpose.

Something with walls that remembered every service. That old structure stood and stood, holding the years inside it, until 1957, when the last of it was dismantled. Not lost to fire, not lost to flood.

Just quietly taken apart, piece by piece, the way old things sometimes go. But one thing survived. The original bell.

It's mounted right here, at this site, still and patient, the one piece of that first Bethel Baptist Church that nobody could bring themselves to set down for good. You can't ring out a beginning like that.
