Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll give it to you straight in Duane's words. Now, Alpine, Texas sits out there in the Big Bend country, and if you want to find the oldest church building in the whole town, this is the spot. Originally called Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, this place was completed in 1892.
Eighteen ninety-two. Think about what Alpine looked like back then, and picture a congregation raising up that building out in the Brewster County heat. From the moment it was done, it went into use as a church, and it did not stop.
Continuous use, the record says, all the way through 1942. That is fifty years of Sundays, of prayers, of the full human calendar playing out inside those walls. Then, rather than sitting empty, the building kept right on serving.
It became a parish hall, and it held that role until 1964. So you are standing at a site that was in active, purposeful use from 1892 to 1964. Some buildings earn their rest.
This one made sure it had something to show for it first.
