Crockett County, Texas

Duane's take

The official marker's the one tellin' this tale, and I'm just along for the ride. Now, out in Ozona, in the heart of Crockett County, there stands a place that saw the future coming long before most folks had any idea what was headed their way. The Old Ozona Hotel, built about 1893.

Simple enough start for a building, sure. But the right building, in the right place, at the right time, has a way of collecting history whether it means to or not. From its early days, this hotel opened its doors to the teachers who kept the county's schools running, to visiting athletic teams blowing through town with their rivalries and their road dust, and to the business callers who kept commerce moving across that wide open stretch of Texas.

It was, in the truest sense, the kind of place a town leans on. But here is where the story gets interesting. Come 1919, a new kind of guest started showing up.

Geologists. Lease men. Men with maps and questions and a particular look in their eye, the look of somebody who suspects the ground beneath your feet is worth a great deal more than anyone around here has been told.

They kept coming through 1921, quiet and purposeful, boarding at the Old Ozona Hotel, spreading their papers across tables, talking in low voices about what might be sleeping underneath Crockett County. And what was sleeping underneath Crockett County, it turned out, was significant. The oil fields they were out here scouting would go on to mean something real to this region.

The hotel didn't just witness that story, it housed it, night after night, while the future of Crockett County was still just a theory in a geologist's notebook.
