Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm taking it from there. Out on the plains of Hunt County, there's a place called Peniel, and the story of how it came to be is about as earnest and determined as Texas gets. In 1899, two men, E.
C. DeJernett and B. A.
Cordell, founded a religious community right here on this site. And they didn't come empty-handed. They brought with them Texas Holiness University, established on the very same ground, at the very same time.
Now that combination, a whole town and a university rising together out of the Texas soil, that takes conviction. The kind you don't whisper about. The title deeds for this place were not quiet documents either.
They flat-out prohibited the sale or use of alcoholic drinks and tobacco. And they didn't stop there. The deeds also banned what they called worldly amusements, and the marker names two by name: card playing and dancing.
Written right into the land itself. The community got its post office in 1901, and at first the name was simply Holiness. Straightforward, no apology.
Then in 1902 the name changed to Peniel, taken from a biblical site. By 1906 the town had incorporated, a real recognized place with its name on the map and its rules baked into the deeds. Texas Holiness University kept going, kept teaching, right up until 1920, when it was moved to Oklahoma.
The town carried on. Decades passed. And then in 1957, the city of Greenville annexed Peniel, and the post office was discontinued.
A community born from two men's founding vision, written strict into every deed, named for a place in the Bible, and in the end quietly folded into the county seat down the road. The land remembers, even if the mailbox is long gone.
What the marker says
