Lampasas County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Pierian Club of Lampasas. Now settle in, because this is a story about twenty women who decided that a town worth living in was a town worth building up. The year was 1902, and those twenty civic-minded women chartered the Pierian Club of Lampasas.

Same year they chartered it, they joined two bigger circles, the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs. They weren't wasting any time. The club took its name from the mythical Pierian Spring, and the members trained their focus on literature, art, education, social issues, Texas heritage, and philanthropy.

That is quite a list of things to care about, and the Pierians cared about all of them. Then comes 1903, just one year in, and the club joined with another group to begin a book collection. That collection would grow into something the whole county could use: the Lampasas Public Library.

Now here is where the story gets its resonance. More than a century later, the Pierian Club is still there. Still supporting that library.

Still making substantial contributions to the betterment of the community. Twenty women with a charter and a sense of purpose, and the town of Lampasas is still feeling it.

What the marker says

Pierian Club Twenty civic-minded women in 1902 chartered the Pierian Club of Lampasas, which became a member organization of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs that same year. The club was named for the mythical Pierian Spring, and the members focused on literature, art, education, social issues, Texas heritage and philanthropy. In 1903, the Pierians joined with another group to begin a book collection for what would become the Lampasas Public Library. After more than a century, the club continues to support the library and to make substantial contributions to the betterment of the community. (2003)
