Grayson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Somewhere up in Grayson County, there's a piece of ground that has been holding a community together for a long, long time. The story starts in 1848, when a man named Hezakiah Warden donated three and a half acres of land right here, and on that ground the United Baptist Church was established.

Now Hezakiah wasn't done yet. Six years later, in 1854, he donated another acre along Pilot Grove Creek to that same Baptist Church. A man who gives land twice is a man who means it.

By 1850, the town of Pilot Grove had grown into something worth talking about. A Baptist church, a post office, a grist mill, a drugstore, a cotton gin, and, well, several saloons. A town that attends to both the soul and the thirst, all at once.

Then came 1858, and a new chapter. Elders John A. Piars, Benjamin Watson, and George F.

Calor, along with a number of other charter members, established Pilot Grove Baptist Church as a mission of the United Baptist Church. They didn't have a building yet. Early worship services were held in members' homes, in a local schoolhouse, wherever the congregation could gather.

That went on until 1876, when a sanctuary was finally built. And for baptisms, well, they didn't need anything fancy. From those early days all the way until the early 1970s, new converts were baptized right there in Pilot Grove Creek.

The same creek Hezakiah Warden had donated land along, back in 1854. Now, local tradition holds that the original sanctuary was destroyed in a tornado. Replaced with a new church building at this very site in 1917.

You don't rebuild a church unless the congregation intends to stay. And then came World War II, and the town of Pilot Grove began a rapid decline. Today it is a small rural community.

The post office is gone. The grist mill, the drugstore, the saloons, the cotton gin, all of it. What remains is this congregation and two cemeteries.

That's the whole town. But here's the thing about this church. It keeps going.

It still hosts social events. It still provides worship services for the community. Started on donated land in 1848, survived a tornado, outlasted a whole town, and it's still standing.

Some things just refuse to quit.

What the marker says

This congregation traces its history to the establishment of the United Baptist Church here in 1848 on 3.5 acres of land donated by Hezakiah Warden. By 1850 the town of Pilot Grove contained the Baptist Church, a post office, grist mill, drugstore, several saloons, and a cotton gin. Warden donated an acre of land along Pilot Grove Creek to the Baptist Church in 1854. Pilot Grove Baptist Church was established as a mission of the United Baptist Church by Elders John A. Piars, Benjamin Watson, and George F. Calor, and a number of other charter members in 1858. Early worship services were held in members' homes and in a local schoolhouse until a sanctuary was built in 1876. During this time and until the early 1970s new converts were baptized in nearby Pilot Grove Creek. According to local tradition the original sanctuary was destroyed in a tornado and replaced with a new church building at this site in 1917. During World War II the town of Pilot Grove began a rapid decline and today is a small rural community with only this congregation and two cemeteries remaining. Pilot Grove Baptist Church nevertheless continues a tradition of hosting social events and providing worship services for the community.
