Duane's take

Here's how the marker tells it, and here's how I'll tell it to you. Now, some stories come at you with names and battles and dates stacked high as a courthouse. And then there's this one.

Plainview Cemetery and Memorial Park, out in Hale County. Established around 1909. That's it.

That's the whole ledger. But don't let the quiet of it fool you, because a cemetery founded around 1909 in the Texas Panhandle isn't quiet at all if you stop and think about what that ground has seen. The town growing up around it.

The droughts. The years that were kind and the years that weren't. All of it measured out, eventually, in the people who came to rest there.

The Texas Historical Commission recognized it as a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2011, and that designation means something. It means somebody looked at that ground and said: this matters, this counts, this deserves to be remembered. And out here on the road, rolling through Hale County, that's enough of a story for me.

Some monuments shout. This one just stands.
