Duane's take

Here's the story as the official marker tells it, and I'm just the one drivin' you through it. Eight people. That's all it took.

Eight charter members walked into the Old Pleasant Hill Schoolhouse in 1892, and by the time they walked out, the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church existed. Eight people decided that was enough to begin something that would last. And they were right.

By 1893, the congregation had joined the regional Cisco Baptist Association, and the following year they organized a Sunday school. Things were moving. The church was taking root.

Then came 1905. A proper church structure, the first one, finally built, standing solid after years of meeting and growing. And later that very same year, it was destroyed by fire.

The same year it was built. You sit with that a moment. But here's what the marker makes plain: that congregation did not scatter.

They did not fold. In 1906, another structure was erected. They simply kept going.

Another chapter came in 1945, when a new structure was built. Over the decades, several pastors of this church went on to hold eminent positions at institutions of higher learning in the area. The congregation stayed active in community and missionary programs, the kind of work that doesn't make headlines but holds a place together.

Eight charter members in a schoolhouse. That was the seed. What grew from it has outlasted fire, outlasted doubt, and outlasted more than a century of Texas weather and hard times.

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church is still here.
